13 Essential Herbs & Spices for a Kitchen Witch’s Pantry

Most witches draw their power from the natural world around them and a well-stocked spice cabinet is a great way to bring the power of nature indoors so that we can access it more often.  Tapping into the magick of herbs isn’t just for witches with a green thumb, fresh or dried they can be a significant component in a kitchen witch’s arsenal for spells, charm bags, rituals, floor washes and more.

Whether you are baking cookies for the full moon, crafting an elaborate sabbat feast, or just making dinner on a Tuesday night, you don’t need exotic or expensive herbs and spices for your spellwork. It’s likely that you already have most, or all, of these spices tucked away in your kitchen cabinet. You just need to unlock the magickal properties that they hold to start crafting powerful, and tasty, spells.

If I was starting my practice from scratch tomorrow, these are the things I would stock up on:

BASIL is another all-purpose herb suitable for PROTECTION, LOVE, CLEANSING, and ABUNDANCE spells. It’s very LUCKY, so carry a leaf of it in your wallet.

PAIRS WELL WITH berries, melons, peaches, cheeses, lean meats, nuts,                   tomatoes

BAY LEAVES are my favourite MANIFESTATION herb. I love writing my intention on them and then tossing them in a simmer pot. They are also useful for PROTECTION, SUCCESS, and HEALING. Rub one on your third eye to help boost your INTUITION.

PAIRS WELL WITH savory long-simmer dishes, rice, lentils, beans, meats,               mushrooms, potatoes

CINNAMON is a powerhouse when it comes to PROSPERITY spells. Whether in stick or powder form, they can be used in spell bags, hung from doorframes, sprinkled into the bottom of your shoe or wallet. Cinnamon is also useful for warming things up with in a LOVE spell.

PAIRS WELL WITH savory warm dishes like meats, chili, potatoes, or sweet             foods like apples, peaches, chocolate, maple syrup

CLOVES are my favourite herb to use for pomanders at Yule. These spiky little spices are powerful PROSPERITY bringers.

PAIRS WELL WITH savory meats, garlic, onions, apples, oranges, other                     warm spices

GARLIC is traditionally hung in the kitchen for PROTECTION from negative energies and disease. It can also be cooked into your favourite foods. It can also be used in spells for HEALING and STRENGTH.

PAIRS WELL WITH most dishes, oils, butters, vinegars, lemon, yogurt dips

MINT is a versatile herb that can be added to CLEANSING floor washes, sweeten desserts, freshen breath in COMMUNICATION spells or be drunk as a tea for TRANQUILITY. It’s also a common ingredient in spells for LOVE and MONEY.

PAIRS WELL WITH citrus and tropical fruits, melons, berries, and                             vegetables

NUTMEG brings CLARITY, STRENGTH and LUCK. It’s another wintertime spice that I love. I enjoy adding a dash of it to my hot chocolate.

PAIRS WELL WITH potatoes, squash, chocolate, lamb and pork

OREGANO is a staple in most Italian dishes. In magick it’s great for ENERGETIC CLEANSING, HAPPINESS and LUCK. It was worn as a wreath in handfasting rituals to help strengthen the bond between the couple.

PAIRS WELL WITH vegetables like tomatoes and zucchini, lemon, olive                    oil, garlic, lean meats, and cheeses

PAPRIKA is a rich earthy red colored spice used for PROTECTION and BANISHING spells. It’s also an ENERGY BOOSTER. I was very surprised when I found out that paprika is just ground peppers and not it’s own plant.

PAIRS WELL WITH mild, earthy, and creamy foods, chilis and stews

ROSEMARY is for an ALL-PURPOSE herb. It’s useful for everything from REMEMBERING the dead, MENTAL CLARITY, to PROTECTION and CLEANSING.

PAIRS WELL WITH most meats, beans, mushrooms, cheeses, and baked                    goods

SALT & PEPPER the dynamic duo

SALT is not an herb but is an essential component in a kitchen witch’s pantry. It is, of course, ALL-PURPOSE. It’s like the edible form of clear quartz, in my opinion. It’s uses are nearly endless from MANIFESTATION to CLEANSING and everything in between.

PAIRS WELL WITH just about everything

PEPPER is another pantry staple that is just as powerful as salt. It’s a powerhouse for RELEASING negative energies and PROTECTION.

PAIRS WELL WITH anything you want to add a little heat to

THYME provides the COURAGE to start new projects, HEALING, LOVE, and PROTECTION. It is also known to attract the fae.

PAIRS WELL WITH pairs well with most proteins, root vegetables,                            lemon, white wine

Please Note: not all edible plants are safe to consume when pregnant, nursing or with certain health conditions. Please consult with your doctor or herbalist to ensure your safety when using any herbal remedies, supplements, or ingredients.
